bet ha-midrash

(commonly bet midrash; Yid., besmedresh; lit., “study house”) A voluntary, public setting for the study of canonical Jewish texts. Within Jewish communities it functions alongside the synagogue and, from certain halakhic standpoints, even surpasses it in preference and importance. [See Bet ha-Midrash.]
